I was at a screening yesterday of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film, Licorice Pizza, and flashed back to the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, where I attended a dinner reception for Capote. I sat at a table with Philip Seymour Hoffman, whom I’d interviewed before, and we talked about being fathers of little kids. I don’t remember specifics, just the feeling that he was really happy about being a dad and that we connected on that point.
And I watched Licorice Pizza and thought: That’s that little kid.
It was…a lot.
Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in 2014, acted in five PTA films: Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love and The Master.
Cooper Hoffman had not acted in a movie before Licorice Pizza. He's a natural.
